SUTTON, W.Va. – September 5, 2017 – West Virginia FILMmakers Festival announces their 2017 Festival Editor, Sarah Phillips.
Her most recent short film, “Smile: A Musical,” has screened at Academy-Award-Qualifying film festivals Dances With Films and HollyShorts, and she was on a panel of women directors at the HollyShorts Film Conference called “Wonder Women in Hollywood” about the importance of female directors in film and television, co-sponsored by the Alliance of Women Directors.
Sarah Phillips is a feminist, writer, director, and producer located in Los Angeles. She is originally from Columbia, MO, where she earned her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri Journalism School. She was passionately involved in musical theatre from an early age and always knew she would continue in storytelling through her life, using her curiosity and accumulated tech skills to continue working in the industry.
Nine years later, she has been professionally involved in the film industry in LA in many different capacities, including acting, indie film casting, cinematography, directing, producing, and writing. In 2014, she formed a production company, Phileon Productions, with her business partner, Laetitia Leon, and they have since made seven short films, along with branded content, web series, and international digital commercial work. Their short film “Separation of Church and Livia” won second place in the AT&T Shape Create-A-Thon competition at Warner Bros in 2017, and is in development for a scripted series.
Her short musical screenplay, “SMILE,” recently won Best Short Drama Screenplay at the Nashville Film Festival in 2016, her feature musical Grimm adaptation screenplay was just optioned, and her original musical pilot was featured on Scriptd.com as the June staff pick. Sarah mostly works as a director, writer, drone operator, camera operator, and VFX producer/editor in Hollywood.
She received her MFA in TV and Film Screenwriting from Stephen’s College, as part of the program’s inaugural class of 2017.
